America, the UÇK for Rugova
BY ANDI BEJTA
The State Department spokesman made it known yesterday that the United States may still be interpreting the name of the UÇK, since such inherited national burdens cannot be reconciled with the facts of the democratic movement that led to the history of the years after ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. This statement indirectly also blames the UÇK. Recently UÇK-Drenica, UÇK- to [?]erp[?]e and the UÇK not only do not at all support Rugova’s political program, but beyond all that they strongly shake up the serious developments that have occurred in this organization.
In a statement two days earlier, the UÇK called for solving the problem through arms, while yesterday after the meeting of the American ambassador Holbrooke with Ibrahim Rugova, this statement in fact blames the international community for supporting the moderate pacifist. Furthermore, the State Department, the concern for appointing precedents such as the Irish, the Sinns, and the Palestinians, at a certain moment the United States could decide to cut off contact with the well-established elements of the entire Kosovar political movement. However, for the moves made by the Americans, it has been noted without being exercised, that only Kosovar politics can be successful for an armed movement, after they have exploded into wealth, and that Drenica is in the credit of roles for this terrorist organization, which means responsibility in the way chosen by its cosm [sic] toward America- implication. In another approach the UÇK showed that it is acceptable if, through orientation toward Kosovo, “liberation” through war is a re-connection of consciousness to the world, with much savagery on the levels that have been clarified in recent days, so as not to listen anymore in order to bring them closer. I have been suddenly struck by denunciations about the moderns and even the cleansing, indeed to moderate in prosecution and crimes with the seriousness that has been accused, along with all the morally voiced complaints and accusations of rejection on the edge of the clashes.
The UÇK says it is maintaining very radical and especially anti-democratic positions. This is necessary because it had been proclaimed that Kosovo should represent the interests of Kosovo’s citizens, while some separate wings think otherwise. This is as true as it is false. Moreover, these wings of the UÇK have idolized politics by insulting Rugova and with many “words” and “deeds” have been making palace talk, claiming that he may not even exist as an important politician of the UÇK and sup. In general the UÇK is neither an organization, nor a political movement, nor a party; it has not even published a political program yet. This is more an anti-manifestation, anti-Rugova, and negative propaganda directed only from t[?]a. Its recent statements are simply an Americanization for the presentation of Kosovo, as soon as they became known in the Western press. The UÇK is with the choice of an action and that which yesterday accused voices of having been told by the Serbian state police is true. And since its representatives have taken public responsibility on television, it would be in Kosovo’s interest for them to moderate themselves and return to the democratic path. If these statements were made to counter a statement by the Prime Minister of Serbia, Milošević, about the Rugova agreement, this statement does nothing other than serve the Serbian strategy, and not the interests of the Albanian people in Kosovo. Nor is the fact of arming the UÇK at such a moment, and while we have no sign of the departure of the Serbian regime, apart from the hopeless Kosovo weapons and propaganda, a necessary development; it is harmful for Kosovo’s future fate.
The UÇK is not terrorist
